General Mesothelioma Information

Accounts of the first mesothelioma diagnosis vary from source to source. The early history of this terrible disease is obscured in many ways. First, it took doctors of the early 20th century some time to distinguish between mesothelioma and other forms of lung disease. After this distinction was made, it took additional time for clear standards of diagnosing mesothelioma to develop.

What we know for sure about mesothelioma’s history is this:

  • Doctors and corporations had clear reason to suspect a connection between asbestos exposure and lung disease by the early 20th century.
  • A direct link between asbestos exposure and different forms of lung cancer was known by 1955.
  • Despite this knowledge, the rate of mesothelioma has only increased over time. This is partly due to the disease’s long latency period. However, the blame primarily rests with corporations who failed to take precautions against asbestos exposure, or even inform workers of the risks.

The mesothelioma attorneys of Williams Hart want our clients to be well informed about mesothelioma’s history, risk factors, and treatment. We believe that a good understanding of asbestos and mesothelioma is an important part of a successful case. To learn more, call our offices at 800-781-3955.

Global Incidence of Mesothelioma

The overall rate of mesothelioma is about 1 per 1,000,000. This rate varies widely, however, from one population to the next. For example, the UK, Australia, and Belgium have rates of 30 per 1,000,000 every year, due to these countries’ long-running asbestos-based industries.

Unfortunately, these rates have only been increasing. After exposure to asbestos, a person may not begin to show symptoms of mesothelioma for decades. This means that many of the 27.5 million American workers who were exposed to asbestos between 1940 and 1979 may only now be learning about the effects asbestos has had on them. Between 1973 and 1984, the mesothelioma rates among Caucasian males multiplied nearly threefold.
