Treatment Research

Treatment research for mesothelioma and many of the other diseases associated with asbestos exposure is conducted through clinical trials and clinical research studies. These studies are necessary to test the effectiveness or benefits of the numerous new drugs and treatment options all designed to fight mesothelioma and other cancers.

In order to take part in a clinical trial or study for the purpose of treatment research for mesothelioma, a person is likely to be required to meet a number of parameters for the study. These can be anything from a description of the individual’s overall health and age to more cancer-related items like the previous attempted treatments or the stage of the cancer.

Generally speaking, treatment research is carried out at the larger cancer centers that are scattered across the country. These cancer centers are larger and may have entire wings devoted to one type of cancer. This specialization often comes with some of the top doctors in a particular field in the country which leads to research grants from various sources in order find a cure or at least an effective treatment for a particular type of cancer.

One of the biggest benefits in participating in a clinical study as part of treatment research is that, in particular for mesothelioma, the clinical research studies have experienced much better survival rates than have the accepted forms of treatment. For example, between 9 and 10 percent of those treated for mesothelioma are alive at the five year point. Some clinical studies for treatment research have had results at five years of 20 percent.

The greatest benefit in participating in treatment research is the knowledge that the medical community gains from the trials.
