Worker guilty of asbestos violation in S.C. building renovation

A former worker at an asbestos extraction company involved in renovating the former L. Mendel Rivers Federal Building in South Carolina recently pleaded guilty to a Clean Water Act violation, The Post and Courier reported on June 30.

According to reports, 61-year-old Albert Dickson is expected to receive a sentence of two years imprisonment and will pay fines not exceeding $10,000. Records showed that Dickson made false statements to agents of the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) that a water filtration system had been placed in the old federal facility so asbestos would not reach the sewer system. In a surprise inspection, DHEC found that there was no filtration installed, and asbestos was present in the sewer. Dickson’s former employer Gramercy Group Inc. completed the project after the inspection. Though asbestos reached the sewer system, it did not pose an exposure risk to the public because it was not accessible to people, Cassandra Harris of the DHEC said.
