Study: mesothelioma patients benefit from undergoing surgery

According to a recent study, people with mesothelioma who undergo surgery have a longer survival rate compared to those who underwent other types of treatment, an article by Surviving Mesothelioma stated on May 10.

Researchers in New York thoroughly studied 14,228 patients nationwide from 1973 to 2009 that were diagnosed with severe pleural mesothelioma. Findings revealed that those patients who undergo surgery to either extract or reduce a cancer tumor have a reduced mortality rate. Other mesothelioma treatments combined with surgery did not improve the mortality rate of patients. The study also revealed that, like in the past decades, many of mesothelioma patients still succumb to the disease several months upon diagnosis.

Sadly, mesothelioma is cancer of the lungs that develops after exposure to hazardous asbestos minerals.
