Contractors prohibited from asbestos removal project at Pfizer Site

Violations during the removal of asbestos from a public building has caused one group of contractors, who were working at the former Pfizer property in Morris Plains, to be removed from the project.

Metro Industrial Wrecking and Environmental Contracts and their subcontractors, Dennison and ATC, initially began the project, but had to stop when they were charged with fines from the NJ Department of Labor for violations during asbestos abatement. More details about the case are not yet available to the public, as the state said last week that the alleged violations are still being investigated.

The developer and state officials said that a new contractor, Pyramid Contracting Corporation, took over the project and is currently finishing up the asbestos removal.

Asbestos, which was a commonly used construction material, can cause people devastating physical illnesses and problems, including mesothelioma. Facing this disease is frightening and difficult, especially because of the complexities that often accompany it.
