Two men indicted for illegal asbestos removal charges

Two men were indicted after they improperly disposed of asbestos particles form a former hospital in Riverside.

According to court documents, a 53-year-old man and a 59-year-old man were indicted this Wednesday after they unlawfully removed the asbestos particles without having a proper license to do so and without being equipped with the right materials.

The former hospital was used for this operation from 1935 to 1995 and then functioned as an assisted living center until 2005. After this, it was vacant until its demolition in 2010.

In the contract, they were given money for asbestos abatement and disposal costs, but only paid 10 percent of the estimated costs to the contractor. The contractor was allegedly only on the site for a day and used day laborers to dispose of the asbestos improperly.
