New York United Nations building to undergo asbestos removal

The United Nations headquarters in New York City will be undergoing a $2 billion renovation. Projects that will be done include the removal of the known carcinogen, asbestos, from the building.

Along with this, the building will also be replacing its windows in order to put in ‘blast-proof panes,’ an idea thought of because of terrorism concerns in the U.S., especially for UN compounds. During the renovation projects, there have been conflicts.

One complaint was filed by UN staff workers and stated that the renovation project broke promises when the asbestos removal was started before the employees were moved therefore, appropriate steps to protect workers’ health were not taken.

Asbestos is a toxic material that is known to cause rare lung cancer if inhaled into the lungs, which is why it is vital to make sure that the right steps are taken in a removal process.
