Government report reveals increase in asbestos imports

A recent government report reveals that the amount of imports containing asbestos and raw asbestos imports coming into the U.S. increased in 2011.

The report, the 2012 United States Geological Survey of mineral commodities, states that asbestos-containing imports coming into the U.S. increased by 34 percent in 2011.  From January 2011 through July 2011, the U.S. imported and consumed 1,100 metric tons of asbestos, while only 820 metric tons of the mineral fiber were imported into the U.S. in the same 7-month period in 2010.

About 60 percent of asbestos imports are used in roofing felt, according to the report.  Chlorine manufacturing plants used the second-most amount of asbestos.  An estimated 30 percent of asbestos imports are used for asbestos diaphragms, which aid in chlorine and other chemical manufacturing processes.
