High school senior dies of mesothelioma

A high school senior at Pasadena High School has recently lost his battle with mesothelioma. Mesothelioma, is a rare form of cancer that is primarily caused from exposure to asbestos.

The average patient that suffers from this disease is sixty or seventy because asbestos was commonly used in the manufacturing and industrial trades for decades. This is why the young man’s diagnosis came as such a shock to his family.

The development of mesothelioma begins when asbestos fibers are disturbed and they are inhaled into the lungs causing them to lodge into tissue around the lungs. The healthy cells than mutate into a cancerous form and spread through healthy cells in the surrounding tissue. Normally, the disease has a 20 to 50 year latency period, which is why this young man’s cause stands out so much.

After his diagnosis, the teen and his family traveled to Maryland for a new treatment, but during testing he collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest. He died several days later.
