Virginia jury awards $25 million in mesothelioma suit

Last week, a Newport New Circuit Court jury in Virginia awarded $25 million to a shipyard worker who contracted mesothelioma from being exposed to asbestos on the job.  The shipyard worker, 72-year old Rupert “Bert” Milton, named Exxon Mobil as defendant in the case.

Milton worked for Newport News Shipbuilding from 1959 to 1977, first as a ship lifter, and later as a repair supervisor.  According to court documents, Milton believes he was exposed to asbestos while working on 17 Exxon Mobile oil tankers at Newport New Shipbuilding.  The exposure to asbestos led Milton to develop a rare form of cancer called mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma often does not show symptoms until years or decades after being exposed to asbestos.  In addition, it is very aggressive and difficult to treat.  Doctors expect Milton has two more years to live.
