PA Plant Receives $4 Million Grant to Clean Asbestos

A former Keasbey & Mattison plant in Ambler, Pennsylvania has received a cash injection of $4 million from the state. The $4 million grant comes from the Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program. Products containing asbestos were manufactured at this plant until the early 1970’s. It remains one of the most contaminated sites in Ambler.

Asbestos was manufactured cheaply and the substance features many desirable physical and chemical properties. Hence it was widely used for much of the twentieth century in schools and public buildings. Homes were also built using asbestos-containing construction materials. Asbestos fibers were extremely durable, strong, and fire-resistant.

However Asbestos fibers, when inhaled or ingested, can cause the dreaded cancer of the lungs known as mesothelioma. Outside of lung cancer, other diseases that can result from asbestos exposure include asbestosis and colorectal cancer. Due to the latency period associated with mesothelioma, patients are usually diagnosed in the latest stages of development.

The grant will be used to clean and prepare the toxic site for construction of new buildings.
