Vermont Yankee Power Plant, Vernon, Vermont

The Vermont Yankee Power Plant, began in 1972, is a single boiling water reactor that produces enough electricity for 35% of the entire state. Additionally, this power plant employs 650 people. However, the boiling water reactor, or BWR, runs on nuclear fuel. Thus, this power plant runs the risk of exposing its employees as well as nearby community members to radioactive materials as well as other dangers.

The nuclear reactor core creates an area of steam and heat. Cooler water is then circulated through the reactor core, which allows the steam to separate into water droplets and true steam. The steam goes through a turbine, which turns a generator and produces electricity. The excess water is cycled back through the condenser and reactor.

Problems with Nuclear Power

Although nuclear power is recognized as cleaner than burning coal or other natural resources, a single mistake with a nuclear power reactor can expose nearby people to lethal radioactive waste that can linger for years. In fact, the Yankee power plant was cited in 2007 for leaking higher gamma radiation than ever before. Also in 2007, a cooling tower collapsed, spilling other toxins such as asbestos into the environment.

Sadly, asbestos exposure can cause health problems like asbestosis and mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer that can affect the lungs, abdomen, heart, and testicles. It can affect both those that work directly with asbestos as well as people who live around structures that contain asbestos.

Help with Asbestos Exposure

Many older power plants contain asbestos as an insulator. If you believe that you have been exposed to this carcinogen either by working at a power plant or living nearby, you should not hesitate to let your doctor know immediately.
