Beowawe Power Plant, Beowawe, Nevada

Beowawe Power Station is a geothermal power plant located near Beowawe, Nevada. It was constructed in 1985 by Caithness Development, LLC. In 2007 the plant was sold to Beowawe Power, LLC, although it is still operated by Caithness Development. It is capable of generating 15 megawatts of electricity.

The Beowawe power plant uses a natural geothermal energy reserve to generate electricity. Unfortunately, the plant has experienced difficulties throughout its history. In the year that it first became active, the presence of brine in the plant’s reservoir created a reduction in temperature and a loss of pressure, reducing the plant’s efficiency. This cooling remained a persistent problem until 1996, when the plant was able to reach peak production again.

Geothermal Power

The US is the largest producer of geothermal electricity in the world. Geothermal power plants produce electricity using natural heat from the earth. There are several different ways that this can be achieved. Flash steam plants, like the Beowawe power plant, extract high-pressure hot water from geysers or other natural sources to create steam that powers electricity-generating turbines.

Proponents of geothermal power claim that it is relatively cheap and much better for the environment than most other sources of electricity. While extracting heat or water from the ground can release some greenhouse gases, the emissions are much lower than those created by burning fossil fuels. This source of energy is also not associated with pollutants such as mercury or arsenic, which can be released by some fossil fuels.

However, geothermal power is not without its disadvantages. For example, drilling for water or gas can be highly expensive. In addition, the plants themselves may carry certain risks, especially if they were constructed prior to modern safety regulations. Like power plants of all types, geothermal plants constructed before 1987 may contain toxic materials such as asbestos.
