Mallinckrodt Inc., St. Louis, Missouri

Missouri has long been a hub for the United States chemical industry. Chemical corporations in Missouri employ an estimated 27,000 Missouri residents, with many more relying on the business of the companies. Mallinckrodt Inc., a Missouri-based chemical corporation with over $100 million in annual sales, employs about 600 Missourians.

Mallinckrodt, Inc. began in 1867 as G. Mallinckrodt & Company, Manufacturing Chemists, in St. Louis, Missouri. It produced early pharmaceutical products such as chloroform, spirits of nitrous ether, acetic acid, carbolic acid, and aqua ammonia.

The Growth of the Mallinckrodt Company

In the next century, the Mallinckrodt Company branched out to supplying chemicals for refrigeration and photography. Its foothold in the pharmaceutical company grew as it developed chemicals for narcotics and diagnostics such as x-rays.

Now, Mallinckrodt is owned by Tycko International, yet it operates as its own company. It also has several branches of its own, including Covidien, Avantor Performance Materials, and Macron Chemicals. Together, these companies are responsible for chemical products such as:

  • Surfactants
  • Solvents
  • Bioreagents
  • Anti-oxidants
  • Denaturants
  • pH buffer solutions

Asbestos in Chemical Plants

Although this chemical company has many new state-of-the-art facilities, any building constructed prior to the late 1980s may contain asbestos. Because asbestos resists chemicals as well as heat, flame, and electricity, it was a very popular insulator for chemical plants. Now, however, we know that it causes devastating cancers such as mesothelioma.
