Thorotrast Radiation and Mesothelioma

Recent studies have shown that some patients who were exposed to the substance thorium dioxide (also known as Thorotrast) may suffer serious health problems as a result. The substance was introduced in 1931 and was used by some doctors in x-ray tests well into the 1950s. Later research showed that thorium dioxide was a very dangerous carcinogen and could cause serious diseases like mesothelioma in patients who were exposed.

Mesothelioma is a terrible disease that can cause serious illness and death. If you or someone you love has developed mesothelioma due to the negligent or reckless actions of a health care professional, it is important to contact an experienced mesothelioma attorney to discuss your legal options. Radiation Exposure

Thorium dioxide was often used to provide a medium for contrast when administering x-ray tests. Later tests showed that some individuals who were exposed to the substance developed:

  • Pleural mesothelioma, which affects the outer lining of the lungs and the walls of the chest, often leading to chest pains, coughing, and shortness of breath
  • Peritoneal mesothelioma, which affects the abdominal lining and often includes weight loss, abdominal pain, and fluid build-up in the body

Unfortunately, the use of Thorotrast was not discontinued until the 1950’s, when concerns about the long-term effects of radiation caused doctors to consider other substances for x-ray tests.
