The TNM Staging System for Mesothelioma

Several staging systems exist to determine the advancement of a patient’s mesothelioma (or other type of cancer). Knowing the stage of advancement is vital in designing a treatment plan specific to the patient. There are several different staging systems including the Butchart Staging System, the Brigham Staging System, and the TNM Staging System. The TNM System is often considered the most comprehensive. T stands for tumor and accounts for the size and growth of the tumor. N refers to “spread to the lymph nodes,” and M accounts for metastasis, which analysis how far the cancer has spread to more distant organs.

Unfortunately for those diagnosed with mesothelioma, there is currently no known cure. If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma or another asbestos-related illness, you may have the right to pursue legal action and seek financial compensation from the party responsible for exposing you to asbestos. The Stages

According to the TNM Staging System, the four stages of mesothelioma are as follows:

  • Stage I: the cancer remains in the membrane of the chest wall, diaphragm, or the sac around the heart and is fairly easy to remove surgically
  • Stage II: cancer can also be found in the lung tissue and/or diaphragm but not yet the lymph nodes
  • Stage III: the cancer has spread to the lymph nodes and sometimes into the abdominal wall; treatment becomes extremely difficult
  • Stage IV: cancer has spread to distant organs and/or the heart, spine, or esophagus
