Although University of Minnesota researchers concluded that it is generally safe to work in a taconite environment, the risk of developing mesothelioma is still higher than for the general population.

The Taconite Workers Health Study conducted by the university’s School of Public Health was commissioned by the Minnesota Legislature for $4.9 million in 2008 to find out if workers who are being exposed to dust during taconite operations are susceptible to mesothelioma.

With at least 82 Iron Range residents who have reportedly died from mesothelioma, the researchers have confirmed that there is indeed a link between high rates of mesothelioma and taconite dust exposure among Iron Range workers. Researchers found few amounts of asbestos-size mineral fibers, the substance that is typically associated with causing mesothelioma, but did find “elongated mineral particles,” or EMPs, in their study.

Dr. Jeff Mandel, the study’s lead researcher, said they have yet to find out why the dust from taconite operations causes mesothelioma or if it is the primary cause of this increased risk.

Unfortunately, many people are unnecessarily and negligently exposed to asbestos, another substance known to cause the fatal disease mesothelioma. If this has happened to you, call 800-781-3955 to find out what your potential legal options are.

Violations during the removal of asbestos from a public building has caused one group of contractors, who were working at the former Pfizer property in Morris Plains, to be removed from the project.

Metro Industrial Wrecking and Environmental Contracts and their subcontractors, Dennison and ATC, initially began the project, but had to stop when they were charged with fines from the NJ Department of Labor for violations during asbestos abatement. More details about the case are not yet available to the public, as the state said last week that the alleged violations are still being investigated.

The developer and state officials said that a new contractor, Pyramid Contracting Corporation, took over the project and is currently finishing up the asbestos removal.

Asbestos, which was a commonly used construction material, can cause people devastating physical illnesses and problems, including mesothelioma. Facing this disease is frightening and difficult, especially because of the complexities that often accompany it. For more information, do not hesitate to contact us for more information by calling 800-781-3955.

A large fine has been issued to Total Dismantling and Carting Services, Inc., and its successor, The Total Group, Inc., for disregarding asbestos regulations in the sate

The company has repeatedly ignored its duty to notify the Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) regarding the removal of asbestos from a number of locations throughout Eastern Massachusetts.

This is a clear violation of the Massachusetts State Clean Air Act which requires entities to give this notice before removing or handling asbestos.

These laws are necessary in order to ensure that removal and handling of asbestos is done correctly. When handled incorrectly, individuals can be exposed to asbestos, which can result in devastating health consequences, including the deadly cancer mesothelioma.

If you or someone you know has been wrongly exposed to asbestos and has suffered as a result, contact the mesothelioma lawsuit attorneys of Williams Kherkher for the experienced and aggressive representation you need.

The Environmental Protection Agency has recently fined a developer after he hired an unlicensed contractor to demolish a building on a sawmill property. The unlicensed contractor allegedly spent eight months tearing, chipping, and crushing asbestos-containing materials.

The improper demolition released asbestos particles into the air near a residential neighborhood, prompting the EPA to deem the area a Superfund site. The government agency spent nearly $1.6 million cleaning up the asbestos.

The developer entered a plea deal and was ordered to pay restitution for the cleanup. He was also placed on probation for three years and must complete 300 hours of community service as a part of his sentence.

If you have been exposed to asbestos, you need representation on your side that is committed to fighting for the justice that you and your family deserve.
Court documents state that one man was the property owner, another was the site foreman, and the third was a demolition contractor for the project. The men were all sentenced to federal prison and will begin their sentences on November 16.

The incident took place between August 2004 and December 2005, when the demolition released asbestos-containing dust particles into the air near the 17th street area. This area contains many residences and a daycare center.

The three men were charged with a 10-count indictment that included defrauding the U.S. government, violating the Clean Air Act, making false statements, and obstructing justice.

If you have been exposed to asbestos, you may deserve financial compensation for your suffering.

The family of an asbestos victim has been awarded $2.86 million after their loved died of mesothelioma, an aggressive cancer largely associated with exposure to asbestos fibers. This is the largest asbestos-related award in over a decade against one defendant in the state of Delaware.

The 62-year-old victim had worked at Crane Plumbing Fixtures Factory for nearly 40 years when he was diagnosed with mesothelioma in August 2010. He died in February 2011, just a few months after his diagnosis.

The lawsuit alleged that he was exposed to asbestos fibers while using talc powder to dust ceramic plumbing fixtures. The asbestos fibers in the talc powder came from a New York mine that was owned and operated by RT Vanderbilt Company, Inc. The jury determined that the RT Vanderbilt Company failed to provide the proper safety warning on the talc powder, making it responsible for the man’s death.

If you would like to learn more about the dangers of asbestos exposure or your legal options, contact the mesothelioma lawsuit lawyers of Williams Kherkher today.

An asbestos problem has recently been found at Buckingham Palace and officials have said that may take nearly 20 years to remove all of the carcinogenic material from the home.

On Monday, it was released that removing the asbestos from the floor ducts in the south wing would cost over one million pounds. Areas of the palace were built as far back as 1705, but after the second World War, bombs destroyed certain areas that were then rebuilt. Asbestos materials were commonly used in insulation and sheathing before they became known as a deadly toxin.

Two men were indicted after they improperly disposed of asbestos particles form a former hospital in Riverside.

According to court documents, a 53-year-old man and a 59-year-old man were indicted this Wednesday after they unlawfully removed the asbestos particles without having a proper license to do so and without being equipped with the right materials.

The former hospital was used for this operation from 1935 to 1995 and then functioned as an assisted living center until 2005. After this, it was vacant until its demolition in 2010.

In the contract, they were given money for asbestos abatement and disposal costs, but only paid 10 percent of the estimated costs to the contractor. The contractor was allegedly only on the site for a day and used day laborers to dispose of the asbestos improperly.
