The Canadian Labour Congress is advocating a total ban on asbestos importation because asbestos exposure is among the main causes of workplace fatalities across the country, a December 7 article of CBC News reported.
Though Canada stopped exporting the hazardous mineral in 2011 and stopped the asbestos mining operations the following year, the imported asbestos used in the construction and automotive industries increased. Apparently, last year’s asbestos import cost was $8.2 million, compared to the $4.7 million recorded in 2011. Canadian Labour Congress President Hassan Yussuff said the government should take additional steps to ban asbestos use.
