An option to treat malignant pleural mesothelioma was recently discovered by a group of researchers in Vienna, an October 24 article of News Medical reported.
Led by Walter Berger, researchers from the Vienna General Hospital and Comprehensive Cancer Center of MedUni Vienna have been successful with their study, which proved the effectiveness of trabectedin in treating malignant pleural mesothelioma. Trabectedin is a drug used in chemotherapy that is already being used to treat other cancers. The researchers tested the treatment using an animal model and cell culture, and their results were published in the journal for the American Association for Cancer Research. Malignant pleural mesothelioma affects 90 people in Austria every year and data shows this number is increasing.
