On Wednesday, August 21, a Louisiana jury awarded $6 million to a man who contracted mesothelioma as a result of having been exposed to asbestos while he was working for Dow Chemical.
Sidney Mabile sued Dow Chemical, in addition to two other companies, claiming that years of asbestos exposure at the chemical plant caused him to develop mesothelioma, a rare form of cancer that attacks the lungs. The lawsuit also states that Dow showed negligence in providing proper safety measures for thousands of its workers who have been dangerously exposed to asbestos over a long period of time. Court record shows that Dow even made an effort to continue using asbestos despite the ban imposed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for monetary gains.
The jury ruled in favor of Mabile after finding Dow, Sewart Seacraft, and McDermott Shipyards guilty.
