A pipeline rupture in downtown St. Louis caused a hole to be blown through the asphalt and as a result asbestos from the piping insulation was released into the air.
Officials with the company that manage the pipe have said that is may take anywhere between a week to 10 days. The cleaning process has taken the crew longer than expected because the test results came back that asbestos was still in the air.
After the first results came back, the cleaning crew had to power wash the whole area again and are currently cleaning the buildings, streets and balconies on 11th Street. Convention Plaza has already reopened, but the area near Lucas Avenue remains closed at this time.
