The state of Montana has now been sued by a Nebraska insurance company claiming that they are owed $16 million in order to cover asbestos lawsuit claims that came from residents in the town of Libby.
Most of the money went to an asbestos settlement filed by over a thousand residents of the town who claimed they developed asbestos-related diseases from working in a vermiculite mine in the town.
The insurer, National Idemnity Co., said that they are owed money from the state of Montana from payments that fell out of the company’s state insurance policy.
The claimants in this case said that the state knew that there was asbestos in the dust particles that could sicken the workers, but did not do anything about it. The payments are not to be taken from the claimants, but from the state.
