Pleural malignant mesothelioma is an aggressive form of cancer that is caused primarily by breathing in airborne asbestos particles.
Although asbestos is not used anymore in buildings, it was very popular for some time. Therefore, people are still exposed to it when older buildings are demolished. Recently, there have been increased cases in Minnesota due to taconite mining in the area.
This is one of the main reasons that researchers at the Mayo Clinic and the University of Minnesota have began to work together to design a “therapeutic approach” when fighting the disease. This includes a version of the measles that will carry a toxic substance, that is safe to the patient, but not to cells that are infected.
