A 55-year-old man has now plead guilty to charges of violating asbestos removal laws after the company he owns did not properly notify the Environmental Protection Agency of a demolition project.
The building demolition occurred nearly three years ago and the man’s company did not file a notification with the EPA before demolishing a building in Harper. Kansas health officials later found asbestos in the building’s debris that came from floor tiles.
When asbestos is disturbed, it can become very dangerous. It is now a known carcinogen that is the leading cause of the rare lung cancer, mesothelioma. The man will be sentenced on April 9 and he faces a maximum sentence of two years in prison with a $250,000 fine.
