City commissioners have delayed the decision to purchase the Elk Lodge in order to find out whether or not the building has asbestos in it.
Officials want an asbestos study to be conducted in order to determine whether or not the cost to renovate the building will be too high. The city intended to buy the building as a part of the revitalization of the downtown marina area of Panama City. The city is waiting to sign a proposal to buy the building for $290,000.
It costs roughly $17,000 to demolish a building without the additional expense of removing asbestos properly. Asbestos can be very dangerous if not handled correctly because it can be ingested into the lung and cause health issues later in life.
