A construction company in Indiana has been fined $137,000 for asbestos violations involving the removal and disposal of asbestos during a project.
The Indiana Department of Labor found that Ford Lumber & Building Supply Inc. committed 16 different violations on a project that required workers to remove asbestos installation from hot water pipes.
The workers were not provided respirators or allowed to clean the toxic material from dustpans, according to the investigation. Inhaling asbestos is the primary cause of developing mesothelioma, a rare form of lung cancer.
