Monday and Tuesday, Saint Louis Park Junior High School and High School were closed after asbestos was found to be present on school property. The asbestos was found in old floor tiles in a classroom at the junior high and in the nurse's office at the high school.
School officials said that they believe the asbestos was released into the air from chairs rolling over the tiles and removing the tiles' protective coating. In addition, they believe that salt and other dirt from outside being dragged into the schools during winter probably caused the tiles to wear. The Institute for Environmental Assessment came to the school's to evaluate their asbestos problem. Officials from the institute said that asbestos is common in buildings and schools built in the 1960's.
