Officials from Indiana's Department of Environmental Management recently found asbestos in the outdoor steam-heat pipes at Jefferson Proving Ground. The agency investigated the location after they received an anonymous tip. Investigators carefully stripped material from the inside of the steam-heat pipes and found that asbestos was present.
The IDEM notified the current landowner whom will have to work with state officials to safely and properly remove all asbestos from the location. Exposure to asbestos can cause a variety of serious illnesses including the rare form of cancer, mesothelioma. Before researchers discovered the harmful effects of asbestos, it was commonly used in insulation.
