Earlier this month, a Portland floor contractor was fined by the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality for improper asbestos removal. The presence of asbestos in a building or home is very dangerous and can lead to a variety of illnesses including mesothelioma. It is important not only for asbestos to be removed, but to be removed safely in order to prevent further asbestos exposure.
Contract Flooring & Interiors was removing carpet from Hewlett-Packard property over the summer and damaged nearly 500 vinyl tiles lying underneath the carpet. The tiles contained asbestos and the contractors proceeded to remove them without a license.
The Oregon DEG is fining the company $10,800 for unauthorized and unsafe removal of asbestos-containing materials, as well as for improper disposal of the materials.
