A roof repair and sealing company has been fined $30,000 after a contractor blasted a roof that contained asbestos. The blast sent particles everywhere and contaminated the area.
The company, Sealtac Otago, Ltd employed a contractor that was hired to waterblast an asbestos roof of an building before a sealant was applied. The engineering company that owns the building, reported that debris and residue was deposited on floors and cars.
The company was charged with failing to take steps to ensure the safety of the contractor and not taking the appropriate steps in ensuring that asbestos did not harm anyone in the vicinity of the building. The company admitted to the two charges and was ordered to pay $15,000 on each charge.
