According to a report published in the American Cancer Society's journal by the University of British Columbia, mesothelioma patients exhibiting signs of depression are far more likely to die than those who do not. The report, which factored in 26 previous studies, found that cancer patients (including those suffering from mesothelioma) exhibiting signs of depression have a death rate 25% higher than those who do not. Patients who were diagnosed with major or minor clinical depression had a death rate a grim 39% higher than other patients.
The report points out, though, that it is also unhealthy to pressure patients into putting on an optimistic front, as this could further inhibit their chances for survival by making them feel obligated to act happy in front of their loved ones.
