Canada is the leading exporter of asbestos in the world. Currently, several third world countries, including India, import Canadian chrysotile asbestos. Because of this, the residents of those countries experience a heightened rate of lung diseases like asbestosis and mesothelioma. Even in Canada, thousands are made ill by asbestos every year.
Now, a new bill, written by three 10th grade British Columbia students, has been introduced into the legislature and is receiving backing. The bill would ban asbestos mining in Canada and would prevent exports of asbestos to other countries. The bill would work at helping to decrease the health risk of asbestos related medical complications.
