A recent study at the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences at The University of Western Australia has shown that tea tree oil may have indications against mesothelioma. A compound made from tea tree oil called terpinen-4-ol has been used as an antifungal and antibiotic and was used in the study against mesothelioma cells.
The researchers tested the compound against in vitro mesothelioma tumor cells in mice. They found that as they introduced tea tree oil and terpinen-4-ol, more tumor cells died. The compounds managed to stop cancer cells from multiplying and caused necrotic and apoptotic cell death. However, more research is needed before human use is viable.
