Some medical researchers in the UK are warning that the threat of mesothelioma has been underestimated. It is estimated that between 36,000 and 90,000 people are developing mesothelioma each year. The researchers also say that more than half of all work related cancer deaths in the UK are caused by mesothelioma.
Asbestos is currently banned in most industrialized countries. However, it is being used more and more in parts of South America, Asia and the former Soviet Union. In addition, people in countries where the substance has been banned are still being exposed to it, causing mesothelioma.
