The Alamogordo Museum of History has been housed in the Plaza Pub since 2006 when the building was leased. Now, the museum needs a larger building but the leasors, the Tularosa Basin Historical Society, cannot afford to continue renovating and leasing the building. This, in part, is because asbestos has been found in the roof.
The city has entertained bids for the building's renovation project, all of which have come back over budget. These bids do not include asbestos abatement for the roof, which would add a great deal more to the price. The Plaza Pub must be used to house a museum, or the city will have to pay $300,000 to the state. The city is reviewing its options.
