The Wisconsin budget has a provision inserted that could prevent victims of asbestos exposure from bringing their claims against the responsible parties. The legislation is written specifically for Crown Cork and Seal Co, but could apply to other companies as well. Crown Cork and Seal has paid over $500 million in asbestos awards since its purchase and merging with Mundet Cork Co in 1963.
The new provision exempts companies from the liability of smaller companies that they absorbed before 1972. While written specifically for Crown Cork and Seal, this still applies to companies like Methodist and Meriter Hospitals. Methodist Hospital exposed a man to asbestos and was later absorbed by Meriter Hospital. This could mean that Meriter is exempt from liability.
