The US Food and Drug Administration has approved Alimta for use as maintenance therapy in advanced forms of lung cancer. In 2004, the FDA approved the drug for use in mesothelioma treatment and later approved it as a therapy for non small cell lung cancers as well. It will now be used post treatment for maintenance.
The drug works by hindering the absorption of B vitamin folate in certain types of tumors. This keeps the tumor from metastatising, or growing. Because of its indications, the drug works well in patients whose tumors have recessed, allowing them to manage the cancer after surgery or chemotherapy.
