Radiation therapy in Hodgkin's lymphoma patients may have been linked to mesothelioma development. In a study of 2,567 patients with Hodgkin's lymphoma, researchers looked for an increased risk of mesothelioma. All patients were at least 5 year survivors of Hodgkin's and had been treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy or a combination.
A follow up study 18 years later revealed that 13 of the patients developed mesothelioma after at least 5 years of treatment. However, of the 232 patients who received only chemotherapy, none of them developed mesothelioma. This could be an indication that radiation treatment is linked to the development of mesothelioma.
