Des Moines developer Bob Knapp and his holding company, Equitable LP, have agreed to the largest civil penalty for asbestos violations in the state's history. The fine amounted to $500,000 after the Iowa Environmental Protection Commission referred the case to the attorney general. The Iowa Department of Natural Resources allows a maximum fine of $10,000 for asbestos violations.
Between 2005 and 2007, Equitable LP performed renovations on a 19 story downtown building that was built in 1924. The company did not take any asbestos precautions in their renovations. Unfortunately, the fine comes less than a week after the Equitable building was foreclosed upon. The company owes about $8 million to Vantus bank and may not be able to pay the fine for some time.
