The Missouri National Guard Armory in Cape Girardeau is receiving asbestos abatement for a renovation project. The entire project, including asbestos abatement and renovations to 30 rooms, will cost $1.5 million. Afterward, the building is expected to be about 99% asbestos free and will much better suit the needs of the soldiers stationed there.
The renovations and abatement were not spurred by the amount of asbestos in the building. Instead, the abatement project came as a side effect of a desire to expand and improve on the kitchen and several other rooms. Upon learning that a great deal of asbestos material would be disturbed during the renovations, it became obvious that asbestos would have to be removed.
