According to Dr Trevor Ogden, the scientist who led a Health Canada panel study on the risk of cancer related to chrysotile asbestos, the Ottawa government tried to suppress his findings because they were a threat to the asbestos industry. Currently, Canada still exports asbestos and asbestos products to developing countries. The Ottawa government has spent nearly $20 million over the last 25 years to promote these exports.
The Health Canada panel began its research in late 2007 and finished the study in March of 2008. The report has only recently been released, and is still only available through public information requests. Health Canada has not published the report on its website because they have had to review and discuss it with federal and provincial partners. The report confirms the cancer causing nature of the chrysotile asbestos.
