Jon Matthews, a man from Buckinghamshire, England and a mesothelioma sufferer, was told by his doctors in 2006 that there was nothing more they could do for him. They told him that he would likely not make it through Christmas of that year and gave him 50 to 1 odds against his survival. With those odds, Matthews decided to make a bet to drive himself to live longer.
Matthews got his odds in writing and brought them to a bookie to place a bet. If he stays alive through next summer, he will have won a total of 35,000 pounds. The bet involves three stages, the first of which he has already won for 5,000 pounds. On June 1, Matthews' pay out will double, giving him another 10,000 pounds. If Matthews survives to June 1, 2010, he will receive another 20,000 pounds.
