A new bill called the 21st Century Cancer ALERT Act could be a great help to cancer patients including mesothelioma sufferers. ALERT stands for Access to Life saving Early detection, Research and Treatment. The act pays special attention to rare cancers like mesothelioma to help bring resources to less understood forms of cancer.
The act requires reporting for any cancer with a survival rate of 50% or less for five years, and with fewer than 40,000 annual incidents. Mesothelioma fits this bill easily with 2,000 to 3,000 people diagnosed every year and a survival rate that is rarely longer than 18 months. Because of this, the act should be a great help to the mesothelioma community.
