The Ash Grove Cement Co limestone quarry in Montana City has been found to contain a form of asbestos known as tremolite. Tremolite fibers are shaped in such a way that, when inhaled, they can pierce the walls of a person's lungs. It has been found in several samples that were taken from the mine after it closed down on March 16.
While current samples show the presence of tremolite, not all of the results are in. So far, tremolite has been found in isolated areas and not throughout the mine. Because of this, the company needs to gather more information before meeting with government agencies to find the best and safest way to operate the mine.
