Governor Jennifer Granholm has proposed a budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year that does away with inspections and enforcing of the Federal Clean Air Act as it pertains to asbestos removal and renovations. This would mean that the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality would have no way of enforcing the Federal Clean Air Act.
While the laws would still be in effect, a lack of enforcement would practically mean that asbestos removal and renovation would be deregulated. This exposes the public to a great deal of danger when contractors or owners decide to remove asbestos themselves instead of taking the necessary safety precautions.
