Nanotechnology is a fairly new field and, as such, there are many things that are not yet entirely understood about it. One of those things is the possible health risk that carbon nanotubes may pose. Carbon nanotubes are shaped the same way as asbestos fibers and may act in the same or at least a very similar fashion when they enter the lungs. This means that inhaling carbon nanotubes could lead to mesothelioma.
Because of these possible health risks, the US recently passed a bill that allows the field of nanotechnology to continue to expand as long as there is research into the possible destructive properties of carbon nanotubes. Now Australia is looking for something similar. The Australian Council of Trade Unions is trying to create safety regulations to protect workers in the nanotechnology field.
