Jury selection in the asbestos exposure trial of WR Grace began on February 19. The judge expects the selection to be finished by the end of today. About a half dozen potential jurors were dismissed yesterday during the selection process. The judge hopes to have a panel of 12 impartial jurors and 3 alternates by the end of the process. However, the defense attorneys do not think this is possible.
The trial will take place in Missoula, but the defense has argued that this is not far enough removed from Libby for the jury to be impartial. The judge, however, has dismissed this notion. Once the jury is selected, the trial will begin in Missoula, and the defendants will face their criminal charges. If convicted they could each end up serving up to 15 years in prison.
