The US House of Representatives has passed the National Nanotechnology Initiative Amendments Act, supporting nanotechnology research. However, while this research should find ways to use nanotechnology, it will also be exploring the risks associated with it. According to past reports, that includes possible carbon nanotube inhalation that would act similarly to asbestos.
Certain types of these nanotubes are shaped like asbestos and may also lead to mesothelioma and diseases similar to those that asbestos causes. There is still a great deal of uncertainty in the field, but the research should clear up how dangerous nanotechnology will be as well as how useful it will be.
