The French aircraft carrier, Clemenceau, is headed to port for dismantling. It was originally bound for India where environmentalists and politicians decided it would be too dangerous for the workers there to handle. The 878 ft long ship contains around 700 tons of materials contaminated with asbestos and other toxic substances. Because of this, the ship is headed for Hartlepool, UK.
Unfortunately, the amount of toxic materials contained in the ship will pose a great risk to whatever community chooses to dismantle it. Protesters are currently attempting to obtain a legal reason for the ship to be disallowed access to the city's port. No matter where the ship is dismantled, improper care in the procedure could lead to great health risks in the surrounding community.
Unfortunately, asbestos exposure can take several decades before showing up as mesothelioma. Because of this, the disease is incredibly difficult to treat. If you or someone you know has been exposed to asbestos, contact the veterans' mesothelioma attorneys of Williams Kherkher at 800-220-9341.
