A contractor in upstate New York has been cited for asbestos violations during the demolition of the old Genesee Hospital.
OSHA, the federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration, says that Gordon-Smith Contracting faces roughly $100,000 in fines for the unsafe practices of demolition that they employed. OSHA claims that the contractor exposed workers to asbestos while unsafely removing ceiling tiles. The workers were not given protective gear. OSHA says that the contractor knew about safety regulations that were in place and chose to ignore them.
The company is saying the allegations are untrue.
Asbestos has been known for some time now to be the leading cause of the deadly lung disease mesothelioma.
